All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has readmitted senior resident neurosurgeon Dr Shejoy Joshua who was sacked following allegations of molesting an eight-year-old boy under treatment at the institute.
The reinstatement order, signed by AIIMS registrar Dr V P Gupta, came four days after a hunger strike called by the institute’s resident doctors who wanted AIIMS to readmit Dr Shejoy Joshua since no conclusive evidence was found against him.
The union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had issued sacking orders of Dr Shejoy Joshua on the basis of the preliminary inquiry report by the hospital’s internal sexual harassment committee on February 3.
On Thursday, AIIMS director Dr R C Deka met the health minister and convinced him to review his decision. “He has been readmitted, but the decision is subject to the final outcome of police investigation,” AIIMS has said.
According to AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) president Dr Debjyoti Karmakar, the hunger strike has been called off. “Our stand has been vindicated. We are going to give a grand welcome to Joshua,” Dr Karmakar has said.
