AIIMS opens Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Disorders

New Delhi: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Tuesday opened its department of pulmonary medicine and sleep disorders. The department currently has a nine-bed ward, a 10-bed ICU and three sleeping labs.

The need for a full-time pulmonary department came up because of a sharp increase in non-communicable respiratory diseases, which require separate medical attention.

According to the data on fatalities in India, the deaths due to respiratory disease rank second after fatalities due to accidents. Also, it is the most common cause of morbidity. [Source: Asian Age]

In other Medical colleges in the country including JIPMER, separate Pulmonary Medicine department maintained by chest physicians is there as per MCI norms but strangely AIIMS never had such Pulmonary Medicine Department. A separate department of pulmonary Medicine is essential and long overdue in AIIMS as complicated forms of TB and other lung diseases are being treated only by the general physicians. It is alleged that these general physicians some how managed to stall creation of a separate department to treat respiratory diseases.
