New Delhi: Dr Sanjiv Kumar Singh Marya, vice chairman, Max Healthcare India, has taken office as president of the Indian Orthopaedic Association. IOA is one of the largest professional organizations in the country with more than 9,000 active members.
Dr Marya took charge as IOA president on December 15. Since assuming office, he has initiated plans to further the cause of education in India and SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries. His vision is to ensure that young orthopaedic surgeons have easy access to national and global best practices in education and training in the field of orthopaedics.
Dr S K S Marya is one of the most eminent joint replacement surgeons in Asia with over 15,000 knee, hip, shoulder, finger and toe surgeries to his credit. In over 25 years of surgical experience, he has pioneered various complexes and advanced techniques to treat bone and joint related problems and shared his knowledge with multiple surgeons across India, Asia and Europe.
In recognition of his service and expertise, Dr Marya has been conferred a number of awards and recognitions including the ‘Praman Patra’ from the Chief Minister of Punjab, ‘Haryana Vigyan Ratna’ from the Chief Minister of Haryana, ‘Distinguished Service Award’ from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Delhi and ‘Bharat Jyoti Award’ from the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
Dr Marya has been president of various national orthopaedic associations like the Indian Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons (ISHKS), Indian Arthroplasty Association (IAA) and Delhi Orthopaedic Association (DOA). He is on the board of directors of Asia-Pacific Arthroplasty Society (APAS), education director of SICOT (Societe Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopedique et de Traumatologie) and president-elect of Arthroplasty Society in Asia (ASIA).
IOA focuses on academics, research and exchange of scientific information. Since its inception in 1955, the organization has evolved into a strong professional body with many sub-committees and regional committees. It is a constantly growing organization not only in terms of increasing memberships but also in terms of sponsored fellowships, CMEs (continuing medical education) and sub-specialty meetings. The annual conference of the organization, IOACON, is one of the largest orthopaedic conferences in the country attracting over 6,000 Indian and international orthopaedic surgeons.
