New Delhi: According to Union Minister of State for Health, Shripad Yesso Naik, 1595 posts of doctors are lying vacant in top government hospitals in Delhi, namely All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) & Safdarjung Hospital, Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) & associated hospitals.
AIIMS, New Delhi alone is facing a shortage of 863 doctors, including 241 faculty members, 458 senior residents and 164 junior residents. Safdarjung Hospital, RML Hospital and LHMC are facing a shortage of 423, 157 and 152 doctors, respectively, the minister said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
Naik further said that the online registration system has brought down waiting times in AIIMS, New Delhi for OPD patients “substantially”. According to the patients’ condition, various clinical departments make their own waiting list of patients needing surgeries in the AIIMS.
“This waiting period for elective and non-emergency procedures can be upto 3-6 months. Adequate medical care is provided to all patients who come to AIIMS for treatment within the constraints of available infrastructure,” the minister added.
