Kalaburagi (Karnataka): Kalaburagi deputy commissioner Ujwal Kumar Ghosh has directed health department officials to cancel the licences of four hospitals where ‘unnecessary’ hysterectomies were allegedly performed.
A health department investigation report released on Monday had accused Girish Noola Surgical & Maternity Hospital, Basava Hospital, L M Care Maternity & General Hospital and Dr Sudha Memorial Smruthi Maternity Nursing Home of indulging in ‘unnecessary’ uterus removal.
Nearly 2,200 women belonging to the Lambani and dalit communities lost their uteruses due to ‘unnecessary’ hysterectomies. The victims were allegedly operated upon to inflate bills by doctors in Kalaburagi district, reports ToI.
Most of the women had approached the doctors complaining of minor ailments like stomach ache or pelvic pain or white discharge. The women were told that they would develop cancer of the uterus if they do not undergo a hysterectomy. For fear of developing cancer, the women underwent hysterectomy operations.
