This is the time when the entire UCMS fraternity will introspect to do better in future. Striving for better is a human instinct and the UCMS fraternity is no exception.

The UCMS Kulgeet was written in October 2010 at the time of Teachers’ Carnival to create a sense of longing among its entire fraternity — be it alumni, faculty or staff of the college.

This was composed by Professor Shridhar Dwivedi on the prodding of then Vice Chancellor, Delhi University and its lyrical rendering was done by Dr Ujjawal Roy, PG in Department of Medicine. Dr Ujjawal, DM (Neurology) is currently a Consultant Neurologist in Ranchi.

UCMS is the only medical college which has its own Kulgeet besides IMS, BHU (Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University) and JNMC, AMU (Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University) which share the anthem of their respective universities. UCMS Kulgeet runs as follows:

Historical Perspective

UCMS is a constituent college of the prestigious University of Delhi. Established in 1971, It was started in a small room of the Department of Chemistry of the Delhi University and then moved on to Patel Chest Institute from where it moved on to the Safdarjung Hospital campus and finally to its present abode, the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTB Hospital) campus in Dilshad Garden in 1987. In its long and chequered journey, UCMS never lost its perseverance and focus on quality and excellence. Its real growth started from the day it moved to the GTB Hospital campus. Additional faculty in all clinical and para-clinical disciplines were recruited, besides its core strength in various preclinical subjects. It was a win-win situation for the students who had the privilege of having very senior teachers plus young faculty bubbling with energy and commitment to do something for the institution to stand on its own distinctly in the capital city of New Delhi where formidable AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), MAMC (Maulana Azad Medical College) and LHMC (Lady Hardinge Medical College) had already made their presence felt in professional circles. That was the time stalwarts like Prof K N Sharma, Prof Ram Prakash, Prof Nishi Madan, Prof P Sen, Prof B B L Agarwal, Prof K K Sharma, Prof J S Guleria, Prof S M Tuli, Prof O P Ghai, Prof Neera Agarwal, Prof K N Agarwal, Prof S K Vishwakarma, Prof S K Bhargav, Prof Chutani, Prof Indrayan were there in UCMS at GTB campus and started preparing the second string laying down the solid foundation of PG training and research. It was this strong foundation laid down by these eminent teachers, faculty of UCMS-GTBH and their worthy successors in respective department which has led the UCMS to its present position of being ranked as the 5th All India Medical Institution of India.

Some of its teachers who have made a mark in their respective disciplines have worked really very hard. To name a few among them are Prof S V Madhu in the field of diabetes and endocrinology, who is the Editor of International Journal of Diabetes; the present Principal Prof V P Gupta, a distinguished name in ocular surgery or ophthalmology; Prof Anil K Jain, HOD, Orthopaedics, who has made a name in the field of osteoarticular tuberculosis, written maximum number of research papers on this topic in the world, he is also the Editor of Indian Journal of Orthopaedics; Prof A K Saxena, HOD, Anaesthesiology, has done pioneering work on pain and has been the Editor of Indian Journal of Pain; Prof M M A Faridi, HOD, Paediatrics known internationally for his pioneering work on breast feeding; Prof Piyush Gupta for his Text Books of Paediatrics both for UGs as well as PGs; Prof Dheeraj Shah, who happens to be the alumni of the UCMS, is yet another flame who is the Editor of the Indian Paediatrics, Prof Sanjay Chaturvedi, HOD, Community Medicine, is a leading light in community medicine. It would not be out of place to mention the immense contribution of former Principal Prof O P Kalra who is currently VC of the Haryana Medical University, Rohtak, he laid the nucleus of super-specialities in the college and saw to it that Nephrology develops to its zenith at UCMS-GTBH. Further, Prof Shridhar Dwivedi, the former HOD, Medicine laid down the nucleus of preventive cardiology in 1991 and was instrumental in having a formal dedicated Tobacco Cessation Clinic and Preventive Cardiology Clinic at UCMS, the first of its kind in India. UCMS is currently the hub for the studies and research on atherosclerosis coordinating this type of activity in entire Delhi under the aegis of Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research. Prof S B Sharma, Prof Anupam Prakash (UCMS alumnus and Faculty at LHMC) and Dr Amitesh are carrying the light. The list is long. The current Principal Prof V P Gupta has done a remarkable task of leading the institution from front and has added and strengthened the infrastructure to a great level which has been the plus point of the college in its current rating. Prof Sunil Kumar Gautam, Director, Professor and Medical Superintendent of GTB Hospital, is making all out effort to augment various services at the hospital.

Most remarkably there are a large number of UCMS alumni who are holding the post of Professors not only in the capital city of New Delhi but in the entire country, abroad – UK, USA and Australia etc. All said and done, the faculty, students and staff of UCMS & GTBH have to work still harder with greater dedication and travel a long distance to scale its position further up.

Let us all hope and pray as mentioned in the last stanza of the UCMS Kulgeet that it attains its objective of ‘Darkness to light’ and ‘Healing with dedication and care’ for all time to come.
